learn it's lesson, she wouldn't become the person she is supposed to be."
"Who is she supposed to be?"
"A happier woman. A wife. A mother."
"A mother? D.J.?" Josie shook her head slowly. "I don't know if that's such a good idea."
"Whyever not?"
"If she doesn't know how to love, how can she be a mother? Having a child is the ultimate act of love."
"I agree. So you'd better get to work, hadn't you? Just make sure she stays alive long enough to learn what she needs to know. Is there anything else you want to ask before you go back?"
"What does Christian have to do with this?"
Raphael smiled a slow, secret smile. "What do you think?"
Josie's eyes widened. "Him? He's the one for D.J.? Oh, I don't think so. She'll eat him alive."
Raphael laughed, a deep, rich sound ripe with amusement. "Hardly. Christian McCall will surprise you. He'll surprise her. What you've got here, Josie, are two lost souls searching for each other. They just need a little help to find their way."
Josie sighed. She wished she could at least tell her daughter who she was. But she couldn't risk hurting D.J. for her own selfish reasons. "All right. But this isn't going to be easy, you know? Those two are as far apart as two people can get from falling in love."
"They're closer than you think. Remember the lessons you learned in your life, Josie. Is anything worth having ever easy?"
Josie closed her eyes, and the face of her husband came to her, as clear as if he was there with her now.
